What was your reaction to the announcement of this year's Sobey Award? Do you think, like Terence Dick that Steven Shearer should be "...pretty disenchanted with the Canadian art world right about now"?

I think BGL deserved that price, but because it is very hard for the judges to appreciate them unless they have been visiting their various installations, then they were lost on them.
Pootoogook could have waited a few more years. This award didn't convince me that her exhibit was the best I have seen this year. It was a good exhibit, just not the best. Maybe too depressing, you know? And this ambiguity being cuteful and depressing I have had my bag in the contemporary neo-folk drawing scene.
I think the big problem in the Sobey Awards is the "below 40 years" tag. That is very annoying. The prize should be for artists with less than 15 years practice, period (calculated upon institutional representation).
As far as Turner goes....Oh well up to them if they want to believe each prizes they gave were to masterpieces of art.
Gimme an award I can really give credit to. The Venice award is pretty hot on target.
Cheers,
Cedric Caspesyan
