Name: "Kineko Ivic (via email)"Donald Southerland has a beautiful Joan Mitchell painting behind him in Six Degrees of Separation. Also a Pat Stier among a few others... this is in the scene where they are at the home of a private dealer. Chuck Close (the actual artist himself) is also in this scene.

Jessica Harper in 'Suspiria' is often surrounded by lyrical, serpentine wallpaper or hand-painted (in appearance) motifs. http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/images/commentary-suspiria.jpg
Sissy Spacek and Shelly Duval and (some) of the swimming pool murals in '3 Women'. http://www.popmatters.com/images/blogs/short_ends/3Women.jpg

Willem Dafoe in "To Live and Die in LA" has a bunch of really bad 80's neo-expressionist art around him all the time. He is a painter, a counterfeiter, and all around scary creep. At one point we see him burning a bunch of his own canvases in a darkened loft!
Later he breaks into a rival bad guy's house, looks around at the art the guy has on his wall, and says "Your taste is in your ass." Then shoots him in the head.
Kind of have to admire the dedication to aesthetics there.
Wang Chung did the music!

Tony Hancock plays a painter of abstract pictures named Anthony Hancock in "Call Me Genius" [aka The Rebel" 1961]. It's a great film for contemporary artists since it doesn't matter that Hancock is a hopeless artist, he totally believes in himself and he's always coming up with new art movements - "Shapism" for example. A younger artist who is much more talented that Hancock falls under his spell and produces great art that is admired by all. Of particular interest is that Hancock's supposedly "bad art" that actually looks a lot like work by any number of contemporary artists.

I've actually been having a really hard time coming up with an answer to this one. I'm tempted to out myself as a hugely dorky lesbian and say that I wouldn't mind having Bette's personal art collection in "The L Word," especially here Kiki Smith prints, like this one:

But, maybe less dorky, I love Miranda July's character's room in "Me and You and Everyone We Know". Most of it's found photos and art and crazy videos she's made, but they're sort of beautiful and her paint colour is amazing.

There are fun scenes of Allen and Keaton at MOMA from Manhattan - somehow the way I remember that movie everyone has a Rothko print or poster in their apartment too.
My actual favourite scenes with protagonists surrounded by art aren't really in the movies but in lit - like on the day Zola's Therese Raquin gets married and makes that promenade to the Louvre. A movie will be released this year - interesting to see how it compares.
